- Main Couple: Jack(aka The Jackal)(vampire)/Nyx(vampire)
- Side Story: Rhage and The Jackal’s backstory
- POVs Included: Jack/Nyx, Rhage
- Book Playlist (Black Dagger Brotherhood Series Playlist)
In this one we get to finally see inside the mysterious long lost prison that has always been rumored but never verified. Nyx goes in search of her sister who she believes was wrongfully imprisoned. After entering the prison she meets The Jackal (who she nicknames Jack) and his band of allies who help her find answers.
This one I found to be rather boring, unfortunately. It didn’t really get all that interesting until about the 60% mark. It had some good moments before then, but was rather slow.
One of my issues was that I wasn’t a fan of Nyx. She is that special brand of bitchy that I strongly dislike. I hate it when heroines in books get mad at a male for wanting to watch out for her and protect her. There is nothing wrong with that. It’s more of an instinct than anything. She is also so adamant to do everything on her own. I don’t like heroines like this. Instead of seeming strong, her refusal for help every step of the way just comes across as more pathetic. Like she’s trying to prove something to everyone around her and seem better than she is.
I liked Jack though and I enjoyed meeting his allies. I just hope they all made it out okay! I know we have some more books in this series coming, so I hope we see them all again. My initial thoughts on the guys (providing they turn out to have safely escaped):
1) Mayhem- I like this guy so much! He seems like such a fun guy! I think him and Lassiter could be buds.
2) Lucan - He seems like the sexy cocky asshole type. And I lovers me a sexy asshole.
3) Kane - He is mysterious and broody. And so brave and loyal! I hope he turns out to be alive!
4) Apex - He seems like the next crazy bad boy like Zsadist or Xcor or Syn. I need this! I love crazy bad boys — they’re my jam man!
I enjoyed meeting all of these great new characters. Again, just hoping they all made it out alive! Would love for each of them to get a book.
The only thing I didn’t like about Jack is his name. We are never even told how (and why) he earned the nickname and he never tells us his given name. But I think the name “The Jackal” just about tops the list as the weirdest name Ward has come up with (and we all know she’s the queen of weird names). It’s completely uncomfy to refer to him with “the” prefacing his name (as Nyx states). If it were just “Jackal” that would be one thing. But “THE Jackal” is beyond absurd and I refuse to call him that. For that reason I will henceforth only refer to him as either just Jackal or Nyx’s much more reasonable nickname for him, Jack.
The story was okay and could’ve been really good, it was just so slow going for me. I’m not sure what it was about it. It just felt like it dragged. It was fascinating to finally see inside the prison though. That part was cool.
I gotta say though, I thought Peter being Jack’s son was pretty obvious and I’m disappointed that Nyx didn’t even think to mention it to Jack when he said he has young. Duh! Could’ve brought that up just in case before leaving him down in that prison.
Overall is was OKAY. Not terrible but also kind of boring. Nyx is not one of the better heroines that Ward has come up with, but Jack and the rest of the new guys (who are hopefully still alive, but we aren’t told) are great new characters who will ALL come live in the mansion. Everyone come live in the mansion! lol I’m only half joking, I actually really love the huge community they have created there.

Wasn't sure exactly what to expect from this book, but I loved it! Can't wait to see the next one in this series! Seriously hoping that a couple of the prisoners mentioned in this book aren't as dead as they're believed to be at the end of the book. :)

Nyx and Jack
This book was okay ... nothing earth-shattering, but a decent read.

I finally finished this book. I started it almost a year ago, read maybe 3 chapters and then stopped. I told myself stop putting it off and finish. The thing is, I love this author but some of the books, just don't pull me in fast. This was one of those.
I got about 40% in and then I was invested. Nyx and Jack are an interesting couple. There were couple of whoa moments and a really sad heartbreaking moment with a friend. I did enjoy the book after all and I'm glad, I just didn't disregard it completely.
