I remember this book fondly from my childhood as a source of pretty pictures in my head and sparking wonder about the beautiful things in the world.
Reading it again as an adult was disappointing as there really isn’t much more to it than that. It’s a cute story for children that does have some darkness in it, but there is no character development and everything feels very much ex machina. The hero is perfect from the start and the evil guy is evil to the core. Nothing inspiring or thoughtful to come after, sadly.

I never read this book as a child, even though I watched the movie many times.
It's fun to get back to things that you really enjoyed when you were little; it brings nostalgia and it's interesting to see what your takeaway is when you're older and how it differs from when you were younger.

This edition had amazing illustrations by Johan Egerkrans, that I cannot give enough praise. I have seen that he has done illustrations for other books as well and will definitely look them up. He has a cool style of drawing, and I like that things that should be scary really are scary, the way he draws it. Kato and his minions should be terrifying, and Johan Egerkrans's illustrations really highlight that in a nice way.
