This is my second read of this book surprisingly.
I wasn't certain at first but I recalled the important bits, especially in the end. And I forgot enough as well as forgot to mark it as read last year to mistake it as a hiatus read. Well, it isn't that memorable but it made for a good past time anyway.

3.5 for plot, but Castleford is just too much fun to give him anything less than a four...

Great finale to the Rarest Bloom series. I had fallen in love with Castleford from the beginning and was so excited to finally get to his story. He was the right kind of bad but seemed to slip into goodness especially when helping friends. Daphne has always been so strong and independent in the other stories that it was so nice to finally see her get her HEA. These two could almost never see eye to eye but it was wonderful reading how they got there. Great story, humorous, entertaining, and engaging!

It's entirely possible I would have enjoyed this more if I had read the previous books in the series, but as it was I found it kind of meh. The climactic scene at the end read as unrealistic wish-fulfillment (), and the Big Revelation after that was just bewilderingly pointless - there was no foreshadowing of that at all. I tend to expect more from Hunter's novels than this.

would anyone really have taken the word of maids seriously? really? even if a duke pointed out that they were telling the truth? I guess this is why the Bad Guy was set up as a huge moralizer, but frankly even that degree of hypocrisy, historically speaking, would not have been an insurmountable obstacleipomoea's review against another edition

The only reason this gets three stars is because I kept picturing the wastrel rakehell duke as Benedict Cumberbatch. One extra star for that.

As is usual with my reading, I have read the fourth in this series skipping from first to last. Well, I like Hunter's writing well enough that I will probably read the middle two novels eventually. However, I wanted a romance and this was the one to hand.
Tristan and Daphne are well suited for romance since he always gets what he wants and she has no desire to do what he expects. As often happens in romance, the sparks fly and the tension builds. Of course, all ends well.
Readers who like their romances steamy and leavened with humor will get what they want from Madeline Hunter. I had a great time, I hope others do too.
