Demon Deception

M.J. Haag

4.21 AVERAGE

Once again, another epic read by MJ Haag! This is the second companion book in MJ Haag’s ‘Resurrection Chronicles” which follows young mother and Doctor-in-training Cassie Feld. Having been split from her husband (soon-to-be-ex) and her months-old child, Cassie is desperate for answers as to what happened to them since the hounds, infected, and fae emerged into their world. Cassie is willing to do whatever it takes to get the answers she desires, and she doesn’t care who she has to manipulate in order to get what she wants. However, that all changes when she begins to get close to the one ‘demon’ who is willing to do whatever it takes to help Cassie out.

I loved seeing Cassie’s growth throughout the novel, starting from a young mother who is terrified of the new world she and her daughter have found themselves in and especially of the fae/demons who guard them all, to the defiant woman who is unwilling to be manipulated by anyone and who will do whatever it takes to survive, finally to the strong woman whose mind has been opened to humanity’s fae-protectors, along with her heart. Cassie was a willful and strong-minded warrior-woman, and I loved to see her personal character development as the book progressed. By the book’s conclusion, she is no longer the same frightened and distrusting, single mother who has to do what she’s told in order to keep her daughter alive. Instead, she has hope for her future with someone who will treasure and care for her and her family unconditionally.

0 stars - RANTING

I really struggled to get through this book - the main character was REALLY unlikable at the start, and as I've noticed in quite a few of these books, was REALLY selfish and annoying. I understand that it's an apocalypse and everyone needs to think of themselves first for their survival, but I though this book was the least realistic of all of them. I left this book until last and really had to push myself to finish it. For one, how can she be a nursing student and HATE to help others?? I understand she wanted to be a stay at home mum, but considering it's the end of the world and she's not going out to collect supplies, you'd think she'd be more than happy to stitch people up and bandage them. It's literally the least she could do, but she had to constantly whine about it - like, does the author expect us to sympathise with her??? Not going to happen. Even without proper skills, I'm 100% sure most people would at least attempt to help someone else if they had some supplies and the other was injured.

It seemed like a complete replica of all of the other books in the series (from book four onwards), where the girl hated the guy because he was different (fey, pointy ears, grey skin), but then used him because he would protect her and get her things that she wanted. Like all the others, she just randomly changed her mind overnight and was like, yeah I love him now - LIKE OKAY????? And she constantly talks about how he's obsessed with her and shit, but then WE have to hear about how she's checking him out and wanting to make out with him??? Like if you're obsessed with him too, why do you have to be shitty with him because you think he cares too much??? So over this shit.

The writing in parts seemed really unnatural - like her thinking about how stupid the survivors were for talking when there were zombies nearby, but then her YELLING "they're not aliens". Like calm down, you literally acted the same way about them a few days ago - but nope, you're a saint now. And then the guy's response was "And how dumb are you to shout with infected around?" LIKE YOU ARE USING A BLOODY MEGAPHONE. I have 30% of the book left still, and my god it's a damn struggle to force myself to finish.

Overall, I definitely wouldn't recommend this book. Stop after book three if you want to have good memories from this series - I'm starting to hate it after reading all of these add-on books. If you insist on reading more, then this book can definitely be skipped and you'll miss none of the plot. NOTHING HAPPENS.

Again, I hate how they depict women in this series - like our entire role is to find a man and use him??? This message seems to be constantly reinforced, especially by the OG characters in the first three books. I think it's really negative and makes me look back on the other books with a more critical view. It would have been better to highlight how the different species work together, instead of sex = immunity, so girls better start hooking up.

I regret this purchase so much. UGHHHH.

Just like every other book all I have to say is wow! I just couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was going to happen next who/ if Cassie was going to fall in love with one of the men. Her story is so relatable a mother will risk anything to find her children. If you loved the other books you will love this one as well. So many awe moments!

4.5 stars — I don’t know what exactly had me enjoying this one even more than the previous ones, but I think part of that was that Cassie’s perspective is a bit different from the previous girls. They were all afraid of being raped, Cassie’s considering giving herself in exchange for protection. So it didn’t have the same kidnapper fetish vibes of the previous ones.

Plus, OMG, Kerr is honestly just the sweetest. I mean, I know Shax is going to be sweet, but I had no idea Kerr had these depths inside him. Seeing him blush over some things was just freaking adorable. And he came across even more vulnerable than the previous heroes. There was a depth there that I really appreciated. And he truly showcased his care and respect for Cassie, even if he had a one track mind and worked steadily towards gaining Cassie’s love.

I was also uncertain about how Cassie’s story was going to play out, and honestly? From that blurb, I didn’t expect the direction it went. But I actually really enjoyed it. It was intense, and I truly felt her fear for her children, and the unknown of what had happened. And the constant pain of making compromises to keep her children safe, while allowing them to be children. It was an interesting thing to contemplate.

I also really appreciated that Cassie’s story had a completely different perspective from the other women. She’d been “rescued” fairly early, and so didn’t have ANY IDEA what it was really like outside the fence, and seeing her fear and uncertainty reminded us of that danger…and of the assets that the fae are in this world.

I really love the innocence of the fae…each one we meet truly showcases that, along with their genuine desire to please and help. It’s nice to read about nice guys, you know?

So yeah. Obviously still loving this series. Can’t wait to read more. I love that there’s a lot of intensity, and lots of steamy chemistry, but also a LOT of laughs to break things up. The laughs are my favourite part.

I really enjoyed the more serious tone and the change of perspective that comes from a female lead who is a mother. Her thoughts and motivations are mostly driven by how to keep her children safe which is really realistic in a post-apocalyptic world this series is set in. I didn't get as much out of Kerr but I like his presence and groundedness.
