Really intriguing concept with a lot of potential. Ultimately I didn't care much for any of the characters which made the book less impactful than it could have been.

Maybe there were just too many perspectives which limited my ability to get to know the characters and feel invested in their stories.

I did enjoy pondering some of the questions the book poses:
If you could find out how much time you have left, would you want to?
And if so, would that knowledge change your life choices?

I loved the premise:  what would happen if suddenly everyone knew how much longer they had to live?  The author explores this question through the lives of several initially unrelated New Yorkers - weaving in the political responses of various governments, the role of the media, themes of discrimination, and the effect on interpersonal relationships.  Yes - the characters all read as if they are upper-middle-class white, even when they are not.  Yes - the author ties up all the connections in a too neat bow at the end.  But I liked the way she played around with the question and I liked the ultimate resolution.  My work book club, with whom I read and discussed this, were much more harsh in their critiques.

What would you do if one day you woke one day to find out that every single adult in the world could know the length of their life? As you can imagine the world could easily fold to chaos. Wow. This book will stay with me.

Eight people. All wake one day to a world who all have a small chest with a string inside showing how long they'll live. Governments, religions, families, jobs, friends, marriages, all changed overnight. Looking at everything differently. The value of life changing and being argued.

The different perspectives, and human experiences. The way people's experiences were intertwined. I was gripped, and touched. This reflects SO WELL the world we live in. I'll be thinking of this book for a long time to come. Absolutely brilliant. 10/10 recommend.
