Short and powerful foray into aspects of male psychology from a Jungian perspective. Very useful in stimulating thought in this regard.

This quote from the book says it all...

"... we are westerners and have to search in order to learn that there is no search."

I have a 15 year old son. I'm glad I read this, and plan to re-read until it makes more sense.

If anyone could help me get anything other than a rare insight into what the author was saying and how he came to his many conclusions, I'd be grateful.

Do you need some background in Jung or some other preparation for reading this book?

The Grail myth speaks of masculine pyschology. X

"A true myth teaches us the cure for the dilemma which it portrays" 10 or 11
"Freud said that the unconscious is the repository of all the inferior elements of the personality, the us valued things of one's life. Jung insisted that the unconscious is also the matrix, the artisan well from which all creativity springs Freud would have none of this so the two parted." 14-15

"Much of our religious heritage is a map or set of instructions for the deepest meaning of our intention lives, not a set of laws for outer conduct. To relate to our religious teaching only its literal dimension is to lose its spiritual meaning. This dimension of materialism is far more harmful than much of what is usually condemned under that dark name. " 30
"Depression and inflation are other names for mood." 36?
"It seems that it is the purpose of evolution now to replace an image of perfection with the concept of completeness or wholeness. Perfection suggests something all pure, with no blemishes, dark spots or questionable areas. Wholeness includes the darkness but combines it with the lightness in a totality more real and whole than any ideal. "64

A great breakdown of masculinity represented in myth. I could definitely feel the surge of my own masculine energy as the myths were discussed.
While I would say the psychological element lacked depth, it no less was an insightful read; Further broadening my understanding of masculinity.
