No one is more disappointed than me by my rating. This book was so highly hyped and I got it as soon as I could. However, there are things that this book does amazingly well and others not so much.
For example, I loved the main characters, their personal journeys, their struggles and how they fought against them. But the side characters weren't as well rounded, I wished more from Tera and Ama than the surface struggle. I didn't understand the motivations of some of the other characters.
I also felt the romance was rather poorly developed. Both pairs barely got to know each other before suddenly they were in love. I just didn't feel anything.
The writing was also great, I got to see Neo Korea and it was amazing. Oh is amazing at visual description. However, most of the main conflict is saved towards the end. And to be honest, the book felt more like a set-up for a series, than one novel. Plus the ending was a bit rushed, and again, I almost felt it was set-up for a sequel, except the loose ends are quickly tied up in the epilogue.
Overall, I liked Rebel Seoul but there were definitely things that I wished were better.

This story of a city filled with people at war with enemies and their own natures lures you in and casually sinks a knife in your heart to carve out a space for reflection, sorrow, growth, and hope. The relationships at the heart of this book feel so true to life and their fights for freedom consume you with their fervor. I laughed and cried reading this, and when I finished it I felt understood and inspired. A fast-paced adventure filled with raw energy!

Really fun, fresh concept! If you put Pacific Rim (or Mobile Suit Gundam!) in a blender with a sci-fi k-drama, you’d get this book.
I was hoping for a few more battle scenes, and some of the wording at times took me out of the story (e.g. a lot of characters needlessly “yelled” and “shouted” their dialogue)… BUT the book more than made up for it with the futuristic interpretation of Korean culture, the character arcs, and the worldbuilding.
4 stars! Looking forward to the sequel.

This was a fast-paced adventure in a future Seoul. I enjoyed the characters and the machines too. The friendships were awesome. I appreciated the romance, but the friendships were actually more of a highlight for me.

This book is brilliant and Axie is brilliant and EVERYTHING ABOUT IT IS BRILLIANT.
REBEL SEOUL is the story of Lee Jaewon, an ex-gang member, set in futuristic, war-torn Seoul, with a wonderful cast of side characters and A+ explorations of friendship, romance, and family.
I can't recommend it enough.

I enjoyed this book a lot, I’m mostly disappointed that there isn’t a proper sequel!! A lot of this book felt like world building and a great set up to a crazy sequel book and then…. there isn’t a sequel? So because of that, it does feel like there were A LOT of loose ends that didn’t get tied… but our main characters were so cute and fun, and I really enjoyed the POV of our main boy. I’d recommend this book, it really was great, but just go in knowing there’s some plot that don’t get figured out by the end.
