The format of this book is simple — a single painting (or sculpture) on the right side, and text on the facing page. The text is mostly about the artist rather than the pictured artwork, which is usually but not always addressed. There are 59 artists by my count, enough to give a nice broad overview of modern art. The featured artworks range from 1883 to 1972. I think it serves as a decent introduction to anyone who's curious. I learned a good deal and feel somewhat more literate on the topic.

There was an aspect of the typography that really annoyed me. I don't know if it's properly defined as a problem with the font or the kerning or something else entirely, but oftentimes periods and commas seemed way to close to the following word, as if there was no space after the punctuation. It sounds trivial, but as it was a constant distraction for a hundred pages of text.
