I was struggling through this during a reading slump, so I switched to the audio book version for the last 100ish pages. Emma Roberts did great with the audio, and she made the plot drive forward a bit more than I could muster. I wish there were more twists and turns. I saw one or two coming, but I did enjoy the mysterious narration and ominously dark setup for the story. I think I would’ve enjoyed this more if I wasn’t in such a slump. ALSO TWs !! I wish I had looked them up…don’t be like me.

WILD ride. God, men can be so fucking disgusting. The story oscillates between Joan’s childhood memories and her present search for her half sister, Alice, after Joan’s ex shoots himself in front of her, in a restaurant. We learn about her history with this man and many other (mostly shitty) men who’ve crossed Joan’s path. the prose is simple, yet cutting and the chapters are short so I just flew through it. it was interesting and pretty engaging the whole time.

to be considered: a lot of the subject matter is pretty fucked up.

Maybe I’m just ovulating, but I feel like a sapphic b plot opportunity was missed between Eleanor & Joan, if even in Carmillaian undertones.

The pacing felt weird/inconsistent at times.

The end was ambiguous and I can see how this is a choice but I didn’t love it.

ALSO  major trigger warnings (TW) for domestic violence, suicide, r@pe, loss of pregnancy, blood, lotta wacky shit

long story short I support women’s rights and wrongs 🤷‍♀️

It took me a while to get into the book because I wasn’t reading it at the right time for me. I’d read The Guest by Emma Cline and Bunny by Mona Awad right before this one and all 3 have the same type of character: a young(ish) woman who is or was abused and becomes a rag doll for men as a consequence. They don’t seem to have desires other than survival until the book is relatively advanced, which is when I started enjoying all 3. I thought it was written very well, with a lot of gut punching observations. Would recommend if you’re in the right state of mind - in a positive place in life.
