I don't really know what to say. Ok firstly, read ALL the trigger warnings before you even consider picking this book up. It was a compelling read and there is no doubt that Taddeo is a talented writer, but I just, I remain deeply disturbed by this narrative. I am aware that art is meant to make you feel uncomfortable and question your understanding of the world, but a lot of the events in this book felt gratuitous. I'm not sure that it left me with any questions or deeper thoughts about human beings and how we treat each other. It just left me with a queasy feeling. It's the Damien Hirst exhibition of the literary world.

Animal is a very hard book to read. Not only does it have a non-linear narrative and a less than reliable narrator, it's about very difficult topics. When this book was recommended to me, it came with a warning about the graphic scenes of female abuse it contained. Even so, I kind of wasn't ready. Animal reminds me of Lolita and My Dark Vanessa and it's probably supposed to - but there's also a heady dash of Chuck Palanhiuk in the characterisation, as well as the restorative yoga class Joan takes toward the end of the book. Animal is about the wounds women are dealt and which they deal to one another; it is about the many little abuses we suffer daily and in our lifetimes. In that sense, it is the extreme telling of the very mundane and it is difficult to parse. I read this book in a held breath, barreling toward the ending that finally allowed me to exhale.

Obsessed with this book. Woven together in such an enthralling way.

I really liked this book but there were a few nitpicky things I didn’t love. The slow burn at the beginning just left me kinda confused. I also thought that her response to her childhood trauma was just a little bit too … on the nose … overall, super cool dark story about power, abuse, and rage.
