Aside from the trauma and violence encountered by Joan, this book is mostly about sex, men's desires, degrading men in every possible way, and belittling other women, especially her lovers' partners.

The story wasn't that terrible, and I guess I have a rough idea of what kind of message the author wishes to convey through this book. At least it captured my interest to read until the last page of the book. The particular thing I couldn't accept was the confusing writing style. I'm all right that none of the characters is worth being liked. I felt the execution is a failure that steers the readers away from the story.

This book took me months to read the first half, and half a day the second.

It was slow and gruelling and shocking. But it really seemed honest and true, as though I was inside Joan’s head, experiencing and deciphering her pain and trauma with her.

This book explores many different relationships. Between men and women, children and parents, women and other women. There were so many elements that added to how complex our lives are and how other peoples actions can completely alter what we believe and how we live.

Joan wasn’t my favourite character, especially for the first half of the book. She’s selfish, needy, borderline psychotic. But when you learn more about her life and the things that have happened to her, it makes sense and you can’t help but want her to succeed, whatever that may look like.

I hated it, loved it, was confused and shocked by it. But it’s a story that needs to be told, and understood. Not just by women but by everyone.

Months later, I still don't know what I read.

The audiobook narrated by Emma Roberts is just *chefs kiss*.  She did an amazing job, and her voice was perfect for this character.

The book itself is an exploration of female trauma, rage, and mental illness. I can't say I like Joan, but I don't hate her either. Check CW!
