This isn't quite what I expected. It was a lot less fantasy and a lot more historical fiction. That being said it was a beautiful story about grief and learning to cope with what happens in life instead of wishing it was different. If you're into historical fiction and ready to cry (and be annoyed with Jack for the first half of the book), then I would suggest this book.

CW: suicidal ideation, grief, child loss.

A sweet and enjoyable read that makes me want to see the beauty of Alaska, but didn’t pack the emotional punch I was looking for in the end. Still very magical.

Lovely writing, characterization, setting, and there’s so much depth to the characters even though the story is simple. I loved the descriptions of Alaska and homesteading in the 1920s, and the way Jack and Mabel struggle and adapt to their new home. I’m not sure the way Faina evolves with the passage of time made as much sense to me as the ways Jack and Mabel grow and evolve, but that’s just my impression right after finishing. I’ll sit with it and see if it comes together a bit more.

It was well written, with good characters. But at the same time it was very sad, and still leaves you with a ton of questions.
