Lovely, sad, a perfect book for the middle of winter. Infertility and loss are big themes. But I didn’t find it excessively depressing. The land was like a character itself.

This book is phenomenal. Beautifully written, heartbreaking, and full of hope. The character development is fantastic, and I loved seeing the growth in Jack, Mabel, and their marriage. Jack and Mabel grieved the life they had dreamed of, but in the end they received what they wanted, although by a different path than expected. Hope is weaved into the sadness of the characters' lives. I also loved the touch of fairytale in the story. This was a magical read.
