Lovely, sad, a perfect book for the middle of winter. Infertility and loss are big themes. But I didn’t find it excessively depressing. The land was like a character itself.

This book is phenomenal. Beautifully written, heartbreaking, and full of hope. The character development is fantastic, and I loved seeing the growth in Jack, Mabel, and their marriage. Jack and Mabel grieved the life they had dreamed of, but in the end they received what they wanted, although by a different path than expected. Hope is weaved into the sadness of the characters' lives. I also loved the touch of fairytale in the story. This was a magical read.

This book was our January book club pick and was a pretty easy read, although I would consider it on the slow side of medium pace. I finished in 3 days. It was not an amazing book but I thought it was good. I loved her descriptions and quite enjoyed the writing style. I thought it was the perfect book to read during a spate of snow days and while it was extra cold in our area. I enjoyed the story and the characters were very real and relatable, while also being likable. Parts were hard to read due to my own struggles with infertility and pregnancy loss but manageable. Would recommend, especially during a cold winter; this story is a good one to curl up with in front of a fire with a hot beverage.

The perfect blend of historical fiction and magical realism. Mabel and Jack move to Alaska in the 1920s to escape their grief from infant loss and infertility. One whimsical night, amidst the grueling work homesteading in the harsh Alaskan winter, they build a snow child and by morning they discover she’s come to life. Their friends think they’ve gone mad; however she continues to show up on their land at the first snow of each winter and their lives are forever changed.

This was an evocative portrayal of grief and longing, and Ivey did a great job capturing the beauty and danger of Alaska! Can’t wait to read more from this author.
