appalled that a <50 page book took me two whole weeks to read but oh my god the repetition…. would it have killed him to publish a revised version…. otherwise it was an interesting read! i really liked this version of west and how human and haunted he was compared to movie west who seemingly has no thoughts beyond reanimating everything he sees.

love fucked up science as an allegory for queerness even if lovecraft was obviously getting homophobic with it. plus just a really interesting part of horror history being one of the first to depict zombies as cannibalistic as well as being a super interesting entry into the mad scientist & assistant trope

Herbert West: Re-Animator is not tied to the Cthulhu mythos, and is a comparatively minor, and more commercial work. This lurid tale of a mad scientist seems derivative of Frankenstein (obviously), Poe (narrator is either mad, or falsely accused of madness), and Sherlock Holmes (narrator plays Dr. Watson to the brilliant protagonist). Later chapters summarize earlier ones, which charmingly betrays the story’s origin as serial fiction written cheaply for cash, while reminding me of Chris Claremont’s technique in the opening pages of each new monthly issue of X-Men!

It would have been better if we could have known it was underground.

Really great except for when lovecraft had to describe a black person that was really really awful then the rest was good

I have no idea how inspired by Frankenstein Lovecraft might be, but basically Frankenstein is the better version of this in every single way. You should genuinely read that instead.
Apparently according to Wikipedia Lovecraft hated writing this. Not sure how true that is, but it really shows through the writing.

Which is disappointing, because I actually quite liked the movie version of it. Sure, it wasn’t great, but it was quite enjoyable. I know I shouldn’t be disappointed because obviously it wasn’t going to be too similar but wow this was just a waste of time.

Oh, and this is the single-handedly most racist Lovecraft work I’ve read yet. By far.

You ever get so wrapped up in scientific research that you live with your totally platonic bestie for 20 years?
