Interesting danmei with a unique premise. The characters are interesting, the plot is interesting, and political setting is also interesting.

However, the ending is incomplete, in my opinion. It was satisfying. Loved one of the extras where Wu Xi and Bai came full circle with Beiyuan. However, it is difficult to like the characters, unless you can connect with them. I couldn't get into the story.

Qi Ye made me laugh myself sick, sob with grief, and fall in love with love again - sometimes all at once.

I loved loved loved nearly everything about this story. I loved the political scheming; the plot was fantastic. I loved Jing Beiyuan and his ragtag team of young nobles fighting for the throne. I loved his complicated relationship with Helian Yi and friendship with Zhou Zishu. I wasn't the biggest fan of Wu Xi for most of the novel, but it wasn't a turn off. I just think his romance with Jing Beiyuan wasn't super my vibe (he felt a bit too... boyish? idk). The plot going on with Zhou Zishu devastates me every single time. Loved the question being asked: What would you sacrifice for your beliefs? How many immoral acts would you commit for what you think is the greater good? A constant reread for me. I wish I had a physical copy to hold and put on my shelf.

I am shocked at how much I loved this I book since I am one of the few that didn’t *gush* over Faraway Wanderers (still really liked it). Absolutely adored Jing Qi and the little toxin Wu Xi 🥰. I am not sure which story Priest wrote first but I watched Word of Honor, read Faraway Wanderers and then read Lord Seventh.

✔️Historical fiction
✔️Politics, war, death
✔️Pining/unrequited love
✔️Incredible character development
✔️Romance (my favorite part of this book!) but per usual with Priest, off-screen/fade to black 🌶️

*Priest’s humor just always hits perfectly for me, especially in her novels that might be a little more melancholy

I’m sure most people already know this is the prequel to Faraway Wanderers and I’m curious what the recommended order is. Having Zhou Zushi in this novel  was just icing on the cake IMO and now I want to rewatch WoH and reread Faraway Wanderers!

Probably a 4.5/5, I really enjoyed it. The only reason why I didn't give it 5 stars is the heavy politics
