I love Georgette Heyer's books and was disappointed in the Black Moth at first, as it lacks her usual sparkle. However, before I finished it I found out it is the first book she wrote, when she was only 15, which is a different matter altogether. There are too many main characters, and the plot takes a long time to really get going, but there are glimpses of the fine author she would become. If you like Georgette Heyer and would find it interesting to examine her first book, I recommend it.

This is my fifth or so Heyer novel. I have loved all the others. This one was so hard to get through. It was slow and I didn’t love any of the characters. Usually her books have been not super romantic, but so funny. This one the focus was more on Richard and Lavinia than any one else. And I hated Lavinia, I hate her so much. I had been warned of Tiffany in the nonesuch and how terrible she was. I had no warning on Lavinia and I found her 100x worse.
I wanted this more about Jack, Diana, and the dastardly Duke, but it was mostly just anoint Richard and Lavinia.
For a first novel it is amazing. Bravo Heyer for writing this as a teen. But it was hard for me to get through.

Yep, this was a one day read. I had a long (and it turns out tense) series of flights with a connection. I knew I was almost done with another book. This one came through spectacularly in keeping my mind diverted from the chance I would miss my next flight! It is Heyer’s first book - written for her brother. I enjoyed it as I would a beach read - except these regency books are so much cleaner and crisper!
I had a little trouble keeping the characters separated (somewhat compounded by the fact that two of the main characters went by several names each) but the story was satisfying and the writing witty and just saucy enough to make it fun
My least favorite Heyer novel so far, but still fun. The parts with Miles and Molly were 5⭐
