Great book! The characters and settings are interesting and well-done, and the "villains" are truly cringe-worthy. The ending was rather forced, but doesn't spoil the overall enjoyment of this fun book.

my first book on the nook! lovely strong female characters and my favorite historical fiction time period/setting - british raj.

englischer Humor: manchmal gut und manchmal unverständlich und unerträglich

Very telling about the place and role of women during the time period, and a humorous picture of the fascination with science and pseudo-science during that same period.

I loved this book! I think there's going to be more books about Alice and Lillia and I can't wait. I always think I was born in the wrong time. Would love to have met these girls and their Aunts!

I really liked that there were no swoony heroines in the book. The Talbot sisters are strong-willed and intelligent. I also loved the elderly aunts. A great historical fiction!

Great story about two sisters who share a bizarre upbringing (father, old aunts, big house with ecclectic collection of objects, enforced education) and who have been separated -- one sent to India, the other remains in the old house. I appreciate the strong female characters!

Strange and entertaining- and cringe-worthy in terms of just plain weirdness. I couldn't put it down though, and although I'm disappointed a little in the fate of one or two of the men in the story, I would recommend it as a different take on Victorian life.
